Once a sound is recorded well, effects shape it. But a rack of plugins is only as good as knowing what each one actually does, the order to put them in, and which ones team up. This guide draws the invisible part — an EQ curve, a compressor's clamp, a reverb's tail, a flanger's moving notches — then lays out the signal chain, the classic pairings, and a real method for practicing your ears. Workflow notes are for Logic Pro X; the concepts are universal.

The Signal Chain

Effects process in sequence — each one hears the output of the one before it. So the order changes the result: compressing after a big EQ boost squashes that boost; distorting before reverb keeps the tail clean; distorting after reverb smears everything. There's no single law, but there is a reliable default that solves most problems.

Insert vs. Send

An insert sits in the channel — the whole signal passes through it (EQ, compression). A send taps a copy off to a shared bus (reverb, delay) so many tracks share one space and you blend it in. Time-based effects almost always live on sends.

Subtractive → Corrective → Colorful

Clean up problems first (gate noise, cut mud), control dynamics next (compress), then add character last (tone EQ, saturation, space). Fix before you flatter.

Why Time Effects Go Last

Reverb and delay create the illusion of space around the finished sound. Put dynamics or distortion after them and you're processing the room, not the source — it turns to mush.

The two EQs aren't a mistake: a narrow subtractive EQ before the compressor stops boomy lows from triggering it, and a broad tone-shaping EQ after lets you sculpt the already-controlled signal. One removes, one flatters.

Insert effects go in the Audio FX slots at the top of a channel strip — they run top-to-bottom, and you can drag to reorder them live. For sends, click a Sends slot ▸ pick a Bus; Logic auto-creates an Aux channel where you load one reverb. Turn the send knob up to taste. Save a whole chain as a Channel Strip setting to recall it in one click.

EQ & Filters

An equalizer turns individual frequency ranges up or down. That's the whole idea — but it's the single most-used effect in mixing, because every problem of "too boomy / too harsh / too dull / not clear" lives at a frequency. The curve below is one channel of EQ: a cut in the mud, a boost for presence, a lift of air.

Find the ugly frequency and remove it. Cleaner, more natural, no added headroom. Do this first, and most.

Gently lift a wide region to flatter — a broad "smile," not a spike. Use a low Q and a light hand.

Cut narrow, boost wide. Problems are surgical — a resonance, a honk — so cut them with a tight band. Enhancements are musical — warmth, air — so boost them with a gentle, wide one. And whenever you can, reach for a cut before a boost: subtractive EQ doesn't eat headroom or add harshness.

Logic's Channel EQ shows a live Analyzer — turn it on to see the frequencies as you play. To hunt a problem: grab a band, boost it hard with a narrow Q, and sweep left/right until the ugliness jumps out — then flip that boost to a cut. The leftmost band is a one-click Low Cut (high-pass); the rightmost, a High Cut. For surgical resonance-hunting, reach for the Linear Phase EQ.

Dynamics Processors

Where EQ works on frequency, dynamics processors work on level over time — they make loud parts and quiet parts more (or less) alike. The compressor is the family's heart; its full transfer curve and attack/release are drawn in the Recording Guide. The rest of the family are all variations on "watch the level, then act."

Compressor

Turns down whatever crosses a threshold, shrinking the gap between loud and soft so the track sits steady and forward. The everyday dynamics tool.

On: vocals, bass, drums, bus glue — nearly everything.

Limiter

A compressor with an infinite ratio and fast attack — a hard ceiling nothing gets past. Protects against clipping and raises perceived loudness.

On: the master bus, or any peak you must cap.

Gate / Expander

The opposite end: turns down (or off) anything below a threshold. Silences bleed, hiss, and hum between notes; an expander does it gently.

On: tom mics, noisy guitar amps, gated vocals.

De-esser

A compressor that only listens to a narrow high band (~5–8 kHz), taming harsh "s" and "t" sounds without dulling the whole vocal.

On: lead vocals, especially after bright EQ.

Transient Shaper

Directly boosts or softens the attack and sustain of hits — level-independent, no threshold. Add snap to a snare, kill a boomy room tail.

On: drums, percussion, plucky guitars.

Clipper

Slices peaks off flat instead of turning them down. Grabs a few dB of loudness with a bit of grit — the modern loud-master's secret weapon before the limiter.

On: drum bus, master (in moderation).

Logic ships all of these: Compressor (seven modeled circuits in one), Limiter and the transparent Adaptive Limiter, Noise Gate, DeEsser 2, and Enveloper (the transient shaper). Most compressors have a hidden side-chain input — feed the kick into the bass compressor's side-chain and the bass ducks every time the kick hits, carving them apart. It's the same trick behind rhythmic "pumping" pads.

Reverb & Delay

These are the time effects — they add copies of the sound, delayed. Delay gives you distinct, countable echoes. Reverb gives you thousands of echoes so dense they blur into the wash of a room. Both place a sound in space and push it back from the listener. The picture below is what a single clap becomes inside a reverb.

Delay is simpler to picture — it's just the echo, repeated. The pattern of repeats is the whole personality:

Put reverb & delay on a Bus/Aux send, not an insert — many tracks share one space (that's how real rooms work) and it's lighter on CPU. Logic's ChromaVerb and Space Designer (a convolution reverb using impulse responses of real rooms) are the go-tos; Tape Delay and Stereo Delay both have a Sync button to lock repeats to the project tempo. Roll a little low-end off the reverb return so the space doesn't muddy the mix.

Modulation Effects

Modulation effects add motion by using a slow oscillator (an LFO) to continuously nudge some parameter — a tiny delay time, a filter, the pitch. That gentle back-and-forth is what makes a part shimmer, swirl, or widen. One wave drives them all:

Chorus

A short delayed copy (~15–30 ms) whose delay time the LFO wobbles, detuning it slightly. Blended back, it sounds like many voices/strings at once — lush and wide.

On: clean guitars, synth pads, backing vocals.

Flanger

Same idea, much shorter delay (~1–5 ms) plus feedback. The copies comb-filter the original into sweeping notches — that jet-plane whoosh.

On: drum bus sweeps, psychedelic guitar, risers.

Phaser

No delay at all — a chain of all-pass filters carves moving notches into the spectrum. Swirly, watery, hypnotic; subtler than a flanger.

On: funk guitar (Rhodes-y), synths, keys.

Tremolo / Auto-Pan

The LFO modulates volume (tremolo) or pan position (auto-pan) instead of pitch. Rhythmic pulsing & side-to-side motion.

On: surf guitar, dreamy keys, rhythmic pads.

Flanger and phaser both work by carving notches into the frequency response and sliding them around — this "comb filter" is why they whoosh:

Logic has them all as inserts: Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, plus the lush Ensemble and the vintage-modeled Modulation collection (Roland-style choruses). Keep depth and mix modest — modulation is a seasoning; a little reads as "rich," a lot reads as "seasick." For width, many let you set the L/R LFOs slightly out of phase (a Stereo Phase control).

Saturation & Distortion

Every other effect so far rearranges the sound you have. Saturation and distortion add new frequencies that weren't there — harmonics, generated when you push a signal hard enough to bend its shape. A whisper of it reads as "warm," "analog," "expensive"; a lot of it is a fuzz pedal. It's the same process at every dose. And which harmonics appear defines the character:

Because saturation brightens (it adds upper harmonics), a touch on a dull sound can do what an EQ air boost can't — it creates highs that weren't recorded. Try it in parallel (a distorted copy blended under the clean) to add density & grit while keeping the original intact — a classic move on bass and drums.

Saturation adds highs and loudness — gain-match the bypass so you judge the color, not just "louder = better," and drop it on a parallel bus when you want density without losing the clean core.

What Generally Goes Together

Effects rarely work solo — the pros reach for the same combinations again and again, because each one covers the other's weakness. Here are the pairings worth memorizing, and why the order works.

Series vs. Parallel

Series = effects in a line, each feeding the next (inserts). Parallel = a copy processed separately and blended under the original (a bus, or a Mix knob). Parallel lets you go extreme on the copy — crushed compression, heavy distortion — while the untouched original keeps the life. Drums, bass, and vocals love it.

The "Depth" Trio

To place things front-to-back: volume (louder = closer), high end (brighter = closer; darker = farther), and reverb (drier = closer; wetter = farther). Move all three together and a flat mix gains a third dimension.

Group, Then Glue

Route like things (all drums, all BGVs) to a bus, then treat the group as one — a gentle bus compressor and shared reverb "glue" them into a single element instead of many competing ones.

Build parallel chains with Sends to a Bus, or duplicate a track with Cmd ⌘ + D. Group drums by selecting the tracks ▸ Summing Stack (Cmd ⌘ + Shift + D) — you get one Aux to compress & saturate the whole kit at once. Reverb & delay each get their own Aux so every track shares them.

How to Practice Effectively

Plugins are easy; hearing is the skill. The engineers you admire aren't clicking magic presets — they've spent years training their ears to notice what's wrong and know what fixes it. That's practicable, and it's faster than you'd think when you practice deliberately instead of just noodling.

① Gain-Match Everything

Louder always sounds "better" for about ten seconds, then fools you. Before/after any effect, match the levels so the only difference you hear is the effect. Most bad mix decisions are just "this one's louder."

② One Move at a Time

Make a single change, then A/B bypass it. Did it help? Keep it. Stacking ten tweaks you never verified is how mixes get worse while you're "improving" them.

③ Reference Tracks

Load two or three commercial songs you love (gain-matched) into the session and switch to them constantly. They're your ground truth — your ears drift in twenty minutes; the reference doesn't.

④ EQ Ear-Training

The single highest-value drill: boost a narrow EQ band way up and sweep until you can name the frequency by ear. Do it daily and "harsh at 3k / mud at 300" stops being jargon.

⑤ Mix Quiet, Check Loud

Work at conversation volume — balances that survive quiet survive everywhere. Check loud briefly for excitement, check on phone speakers for the real world, and check in mono for phase.

⑥ Solo to Find, Judge in Context

Solo a track to locate a problem, but make the actual decision with everything playing. A vocal that sounds perfect soloed can vanish in the mix — and vice versa.

⑦ Rest Your Ears

Ears fatigue and lie after ~45 minutes — you stop hearing highs and keep boosting them. Take breaks. The best "trick" for a stuck mix is sleeping on it and opening it fresh.

⑧ Recreate Mixes You Love

Pick a sound you admire and chase it from scratch — a vocal, a drum bus. Reverse-engineering forces every "why," and you keep the technique long after that one song.

⑨ Less, Then Less Again

The mark of experience is restraint. If an effect isn't clearly helping, remove it. Ten subtle moves beat one heavy-handed one — and a mix is done when nothing's left to take away.

A tight practice loop: pick one source (say, a vocal), give yourself one goal ("make it sit forward and clear"), use the fewest effects that get there, and A/B against a reference the whole time. Twenty focused minutes like that beats three hours of aimless tweaking — and it compounds every session.

Effects don't fix a bad recording — they reward a good one. Learn what each does, put them in a sensible order, reach for the pairings that work, and above all train the ears that decide when it's right. The gear is just the hands; the hearing is the craft.
