Melody gets written about endlessly and rhythm gets treated as the thing underneath it, which is backwards for most of the music anyone actually listens to. This is the note-level half of rhythm: which hits go where, why some patterns feel good and others feel like a metronome, what each drum and percussion instrument is actually for, the techniques that make them sound played, and how to practise any of it. Pulse, Subdivision, and the Bar

Every rhythm is built from three nested things. The pulse is what you tap your foot to. The bar is how many pulses group together before the pattern restarts. The subdivision is how finely you slice each pulse — and it's the one that determines what a beat sounds like, because it decides where notes are allowed to be.

Learning to count subdivisions out loud is the single highest-return five minutes in all of rhythm. Everything else on this page assumes you can find where you are in a bar without thinking about it.

Every pattern on this page is written as sixteen boxes to a bar — one row per instrument, one box per sixteenth note. It's the same layout as the synth's drum machine, deliberately, so you can read a pattern here and type it in there in about twenty seconds. The numbered columns are the beats; the boxes between them are the e, & and a.

Time signatures

The top number is how many beats are in a bar; the bottom is what kind of note gets a beat. Nearly all popular music is in 4/4, and it's worth knowing why: four is the smallest number that lets you have a strong beat, a weak one, a semi-strong one and another weak one — enough asymmetry to feel like a shape, few enough to predict.

6/8 and 3/4 contain the same six eighth notes and are not the same thing: 3/4 groups them 3×2 and 6/8 groups them 2×3. Which one you're in is a question about where the accents fall, not about how many notes there are — and that difference is the whole distinction between a waltz and a blues shuffle.

What Makes a Beat Good

A good beat is not a complicated one. Most of the most successful rhythms in recorded history are simple to the point of being trivial on paper. What they have in common is a small number of properties that are worth naming, because once you can name them you can diagnose a beat that isn't working.

You can find the one

The listener must always know where the bar starts, even without counting. If your beat is so syncopated that the downbeat is ambiguous, people can't move to it. Syncopation is only exciting when there's a clear grid to be syncopated against.

Repetition, then a break in it

The near-universal pattern is three bars the same and a variation on the fourth — a fill, an extra kick, a dropped hat. Enough repetition to be hypnotic, enough change to stop being wallpaper. Four bars is the natural unit.

Space

The notes you don't play define the ones you do. A beat with a hit on every sixteenth has no dynamics available to it — nowhere left to go. Reggae's one drop is the extreme case: its defining feature is a beat 1 with nothing on it.

Question and answer

Great beats phrase in two-bar units, not one. The first bar poses something and the second resolves or answers it. Loop a single bar and it feels static; loop two related bars and it feels like it's going somewhere.

One thing is busy

If the hats are playing sixteenths, the kick should be sparse. If the kick is dense and syncopated, keep the hats simple. Two busy layers cancel out — the ear can only follow one subdivision at a time.

It changes between sections

A beat that's identical in the verse and the chorus makes the chorus feel like nothing happened. Add the open hat, double the kick, bring in the ride. The drums are part of the arrangement, not a bed underneath it.

There's a diagnostic worth applying when a beat isn't working: can you sing it? Real rhythms are memorable the way melodies are — you can vocalise the Amen break, the Funky Drummer, a dembow. If your pattern can't be hummed back after two listens, it's probably a texture rather than a beat, and no amount of sound selection will turn it into one.

The most common beginner mistake is not simplicity — it's uniform density. Something on every sixteenth, all at the same volume, in every bar. Delete half of it and put accents on what's left, and the same pattern becomes a groove.

A Vocabulary of Beats

These are the load-bearing rhythms of popular music. They're worth knowing not to copy but to recognise — nearly everything you hear is one of these, a hybrid of two, or a deliberate departure from one. Program each of them once and you'll start hearing them everywhere.

House, disco, techno. The kick marks every beat, which is why it's so easy to dance to — there is no ambiguity about where you are. The open hat on the off-beats is the genre's signature lift.

Classic hip-hop. Sparse kick, hard snare on the backbeat, and — crucially — the second kick lands just before beat 3 rather than on it. That displacement is most of the feel.

The kick pattern is sparse and syncopated while the hats carry everything, subdividing into 32nds and triplets. The 808 is a bass instrument as much as a drum — it plays notes, not just hits.

The Funk Beat

The ghost notes are the entire point. The loud snare hits are on 2 and 4 as always, but the quiet ones filling the gaps are what makes it funk instead of rock. Play them at a third of the volume.

One Drop

Reggae. There is deliberately no kick on beat 1 — the bar drops into emptiness and the kick and snare land together on beat 3. It's the clearest example of a beat defined by what it leaves out.

Tresillo

Three-three-two. The most widespread rhythmic cell in popular music on earth — it underlies reggaeton, most Latin music, a great deal of hip-hop, and an enormous amount of pop. Count 1 – and-of-2 – 4.

Brazilian, and built on the clave family. The rim-click pattern is the identity; the kick is soft and constant underneath. Sparse, unhurried, and much harder to program convincingly than it looks.

West African, and polyrhythmic by design: the shaker, bell and kick are each playing a different cycle, and the interest comes from where they coincide rather than from any single pattern.

Notice how few notes most of these contain. The ones that feel most complex — the funk beat, afrobeat — are complex in their accents, not their note count. That's the lesson of the whole section.

The Drum Kit as a Set of Jobs

A drum kit isn't a collection of drums — it's a set of distinct roles, each occupying a different frequency range and a different job in the pattern. Understanding the role is what lets you substitute: once you know the hats are keeping the subdivision, a shaker or a closed rim can do it instead.

The useful reframe: a beat is three jobs, not three instruments. Something marks the pulse, something marks the backbeat, something keeps the subdivision. Fill those three roles with anything at all — a stomp, a clap and a shaker — and you have a beat. Fill them with a kick, snare and hat and you have a conventional one. The roles are the invariant; the instruments are a choice.

Percussion and What It Adds

Percussion is the cheapest way to make a programmed beat sound like people. It occupies frequency ranges the kit leaves empty, it moves constantly in a way a looped kit doesn't, and almost all of it can be recorded on a phone. One shaker layer is often the difference between a beat that sounds like a demo and one that doesn't.

Shaker

Keeps sixteenths without adding a transient that competes with anything. The workhorse. Its motion is forward-back, so the return stroke is a note too — that's why real shaker playing has an alternating accent a programmed one lacks.

Tambourine

Sits on the backbeat with the snare and makes it sound bigger without adding low end. Two ways to play it: hit it for a sharp accent, or shake it for a sustained wash. Pop choruses use both at once.

Congas

Pitched hand drums, usually a pair. Three core tones: open (fingers on the edge, rings), slap (sharp crack), bass (flat palm in the centre). Nearly all Latin conga parts are those three in a repeating cycle.

Bongos

Smaller, higher, faster than congas, and played between the knees. They handle the busy improvised layer — the martillo pattern is the standard — sitting above everything else in pitch.

Cowbell

Cuts through anything, which is the point and the danger. Used as a timekeeper in salsa and mambo rather than as a joke. Mix it well below where it feels right in solo.

Claves

Two sticks, one pattern, enormous consequences. They state the clave that the rest of the ensemble organises itself around — see the section below. Dry, sharp, and almost never played with any variation at all.

Cabasa & Guiro

Scraped rather than struck, so they produce a sustained texture with a rhythmic edge. Excellent for filling the space between a sparse kit and a busy top end without adding more transients.

Claps & Snaps

Not lesser snares — a different instrument. A clap is many slightly-offset transients, which is why a stacked, spread clap sounds wide and human where a single one sounds thin. Record eight takes of yourself and layer them.

Djembe & Frame Drums

Hand drums with a wide dynamic range and, on the djembe, the same three-tone vocabulary as congas — bass, tone, slap. A frame drum can cover both the pulse and the subdivision at once, which is why so much folk music needs only one player.

Found percussion

Keys, a table, a book, a pen on a mug, your chest. Genuinely used on records constantly. The imperfection is the value — nothing in a sample library sounds like a specific room and a specific object.

A practical layering order that rarely fails: shaker for the sixteenths, tambourine on the backbeat, and one pitched hand drum doing something syncopated. Three layers, each quiet, each panned away from centre — see panning — and a static loop starts breathing.

Techniques Worth Knowing

These are the moves that separate a part that sounds played from one that sounds entered. Every one of them is available whether you're behind a kit or programming — knowing the physical technique tells you what to program.

The rudiments worth your time

There are forty official drum rudiments and you need about four. They're patterns of left and right strokes, and their value is that they make your weaker hand as reliable as your stronger one — which is what makes everything else possible.

Single stroke roll

R L R L R L R L — alternating. Underlies nearly every fill you'll ever play. Practise it slowly and evenly before you practise it fast.

Double stroke roll

R R L L R R L L — two per hand, the second from a controlled bounce. This is the one that unlocks speed, and the one that takes longest.

Paradiddle

R L R R L R L L — the sticking flips every bar, which is why it's the standard tool for moving around the kit and for accenting patterns your hands couldn't otherwise reach.

Flam tap

lR R rL L — a flam followed by a tap. Teaches control of two different dynamic levels in the same hand, which is the physical basis of ghost notes.

If you're programming rather than playing, rudiments still matter — they tell you what's physically plausible. A fill that a human couldn't stick will sound synthetic even when every note is in the right place, and knowing the sticking is how you avoid writing one.

Clave, Tresillo & Polyrhythm

Most rhythm education stops at the backbeat, which leaves out the organising principles behind an enormous proportion of the world's music — and behind a great deal of what's on the radio, usually without credit. These three ideas will change how you hear rhythm.

Five notes across two bars — the organising principle of Cuban music and, through it, a great deal of everything else. The first bar has three notes, the second has two. Everything in the arrangement is placed relative to it.

The same five notes with the bars swapped. It is not a different rhythm — it's the same rhythm entered from the other side, and a band playing one while the singer phrases the other is the classic way to sound wrong in Latin music.

Three Against Two

The simplest polyrhythm and the gateway to all of them. Two evenly spaced notes and three evenly spaced notes across the same span. Say “nice cup of tea”nice and of are the two, nice, cup, tea are the three.

Clave is not a drum part — it's a rule. In Cuban music the clave states a two-bar cycle and every other instrument is written to agree with it; a phrase that lands correctly against 3-2 will feel wrong against 2-3, and musicians will tell you the arrangement is "crossed." You don't have to play salsa to use this: the idea that an arrangement can have an asymmetric two-bar reference is portable to any genre, and it's a fast way to make a loop stop feeling like one bar repeated.

Tresillo — the 3-3-2 cell above — is worth singling out as probably the most widespread rhythmic figure in popular music worldwide. It's the habanera, it's the bassline of half of New Orleans, it's reggaeton's kick, it's in an extraordinary amount of contemporary pop. If a beat of yours feels four-square and you want it to lean, replacing an even kick pattern with tresillo is the shortest path there.

Polyrhythm is two different subdivisions running at once — three against two, four against three. It's the core of West African music and it's why afrobeat feels like it's rotating rather than marching. The practical version for a producer: give the shaker a cycle whose length doesn't divide evenly into the bar, and the loop stops sounding like a loop because the pattern takes several bars to come back around.

A gentle way in: put a 3-note cycle on a percussion layer over a 4/4 beat. The percussion returns to the downbeat every three bars instead of every one, and four bars of an otherwise static loop suddenly have a shape. This is the cheapest trick on this entire page.

How to Practise Rhythm

Rhythm improves faster than almost any other musical skill because the feedback is binary — you're either with it or you aren't — and because you can practise it without an instrument, anywhere, using your hands and your voice. None of what follows requires a drum kit.

Five focused minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday, and the reason is specific: rhythm is a motor skill, and motor skills consolidate between sessions rather than during them. Frequency matters more than duration.

A beat is three jobs — pulse, backbeat, subdivision — filled by whatever you like. Keep one layer busy and the rest sparse, phrase in twos, leave the fourth bar free to break the pattern, and count out loud until you don't have to. Then go and program one on the drum machine.
